Dead Coal Plants Have Something No One Can Build Fast: a Grid Connection

The Old Power Map Is the New Power Map

A coal plant called Breed shut down in Sullivan County, Indiana. Workers left. Lights went dark. But the wires stayed.

On Monday, Amazon, AEP, and X-energy signed a deal to explore putting 12 small nuclear reactors on that same site. 960 megawatts. Carbon-free. Built on a patch of land that already has a grid hookup.

Five days before that, AEP made a different bet. A $4 billion fuel cell plant near Cheyenne, Wyoming. 702 megawatts of Bloom Energy tech. No combustion. Google signed a 20-year deal to buy the power. Full operation is planned by late 2028.

Two deals. One utility. Close to $9 billion. One week.

Why these sites? Because they come with the one thing no one can build fast: a grid connection.

New transmission takes a decade. Lawrence Berkeley National Lab says the median wait from request to operation has doubled to more than five years. A retired coal site skips that line. The wires, the substations, the water, the zoning — all in place.

How Much of a $500K IRA Could You Convert Without Entering the 35% Bracket?

Converting a large IRA to a Roth can potentially be a smart move for high earners — but how much you convert, and when, affects how much of it is taxed at the higher rate.

For 2026, the 35% federal income-tax bracket begins at taxable income over $512,450 for married couples filing jointly and $256,225 for single filers. Income at or below those amounts is taxed at 32% or less. Income above $768,700 for joint filers or $640,600 for single filers enters the 37% bracket.

Depending on your filing status, other taxable income, deductions and the taxable portion of the conversion, converting $500K in one year could push some income into a higher federal tax bracket. One strategy some taxpayers consider is converting an amount that keeps taxable income within a targeted bracket and completing additional conversions in later years.

Getting that math right and factoring in Medicare surcharges, state taxes, and how you pay the bill is where a financial advisor can potentially help.

SmartAsset's free tool helps you find and compare vetted fiduciary advisors who serve your area, each legally bound to work in your best interest.

It's never too late to plan to work toward a comfortable retirement.

EIA data shows more than 630 coal units have retired since 2000. Of those, 329 had capacity above 100 MW. Each one left behind a ready-made grid on-ramp.

The pattern is spreading. Xcel Energy turned the old Sherco coal plant in Minnesota into a solar hub — 710 MW online, heading to 910 MW by 2029. In Pennsylvania, the Bruce Mansfield site is being repowered with gas for 2,550 MW. In Wyoming, TerraPower is building its Natrium reactor near the Naughton coal plant.

A 2022 study found that reusing coal infrastructure could cut a new nuclear plant's capital cost by 15% to 35% versus a greenfield build.

"We should stop treating retiring plants as reliability concerns and start treating them as the grid's fastest path to new capacity."

— Briggs White, former DOE official and president of Keystone Ascent, in POWER Magazine

AEP just proved the model works at scale. Its Cheyenne fuel cell plant starts construction this year. Two years to full power. That pace is not possible on bare land.

And 467 coal units are still running. Many are aging fast. Each one sits on a grid connection that a hyperscaler would pay billions for.

The fastest path to new data center power doesn't start with a shovel. It starts with a retirement notice.

I'm Giving This Away (Seriously)

Quick question...

Would you spend 60 seconds to save yourself $29.97?

Earnings Week Hits the Power Grid

  • NextEra Energy (NEE) reports Q3 this morning. Wall Street expects $1.19 EPS on $9.05 billion in revenue. Analysts want to hear about FPL's rate base and new data center contracts. This is the first big grid utility to post this quarter.

  • Tomorrow it's Bloom Energy (BE). The Street projects $1.06 billion in revenue — a 104% jump from a year ago. Shares are still up more than 150% in 2026, even after sliding from $280 to $221. AEP's $4 billion fuel cell order gives the call extra weight.

  • Speaking of AEP — American Electric Power (AEP) signed close to $9 billion in data center power deals in five days. A $4 billion Bloom fuel cell plant for Google on October 14. A 960 MW SMR deal with Amazon on October 19. No other utility has matched that sprint.

  • The GRID ETF slipped to $11.5 billion in assets, down from $12.4 billion earlier this month. A rare dip for a fund that tripled in two years. The DOE emergency order and PJM noise may be rattling holders at the margin.

Four reports in eight days. The power grid just became earnings season's main event.

The 100-Hour Battery Arrives

In February, Google placed the biggest battery order ever. Not lithium-ion. Iron and air.

Form Energy will build a 300 MW system in Minnesota. It holds 30 GWh of stored power. Enough to feed the grid for 100 straight hours. More than four full days.

Google plans to pair it with 1.6 GW of new wind and solar. The aim: run a data center on clean power around the clock. Even when the sun sets. Even when the wind dies for three days.

One month later, Crusoe signed up for 12 GWh more. Same tech. Same maker. Deliveries start in 2027.

30 GWh
Google's Minnesota iron-air battery — the largest ever contracted for a data center

Lithium-ion has a ceiling. It stores power for four hours. That handles a peak spike. It can't carry a server farm through a calm week.

Iron-air can. And it's cheap. The active materials are iron, water, and air. Form Energy targets a cost below $20 per kilowatt-hour. That's about one-fifth the price of lithium-ion at scale.

Data centers run nonstop. They need baseload. Gas gives them that. Nuclear gives them that. Now iron-air plus wind and solar can too.

Form's factory sits in Weirton, West Virginia. It opened in 2024 on the grounds of a former steel mill. Old iron country, building iron batteries.

If iron-air works at this scale, it fills the one gap that kept renewables out of data centers: the days without sun or wind.
